You Should Consider Your Pilates Accessories as Crucial Elements of Your Routine

By Gina Parker

Even if you only do mat Pilates, you will still need a mat. That's because it protects your spine. So, it is probably safe to say that you must have accessories to do Pilates. I'm not talking about the new-fangled kind of "Pilates" inventions, but the classic pieces of the puzzle that can really aid you in you routine.

If you've ever worked out on a reformer you probably know what a loop is. They are what you put your feet it while your doing leg work. Also, there is an accessory called a double loop which is allows you to effectively adjust the ropes with the loop.

Handles are another part of the whole process when working on Pilates machines. Here's the thing they come in many combination of materials so the only way to really find out which is best is to experiment over time. I'm sure you'll find your favorite.

The Gondola pole is the most commonly used Pilates pole and for a good reason: it helps one maintain their balance when they are doing standing work on the reformer. Poles are all about adding even more diversity then the basic 500 exercises already allow.

Other poles can also be used for various needs or specific routines. If you're just starting out though, don't worry you do not need to concern yourself with Pilates poles for awhile.

Another Pilates Accessory that is more commonly used are cushions. Again, they can be used to tweak your position and comfort in order to tailor make specific exercises based on your needs.

Something as simple as a Pilates mat needs to have some thought given to it. For instance did you know that a simply busy pattern on your mat may adversely affect you doing your routine? Also, you have to be aware of the portability and size so that the mat will be something that you can use without hassle. Thickness of the mat is another consideration that must be weighed. You want the right amount of protection, yet you don't want to find yourself sinking into the mat and making be a negative thing.

These are just a few of the many accessories that can ad value to any Pilates experience. Many other factors come into play. Price and quality are two big ones of course. I like to view all accessories with an eye toward longevity because I like to think I have decades of Pilates ahead of me. - 30514
